In Wake, Johnston, Durham and Franklin, your children's assigned public schools depend on your home address. Each district has a lookup tool, a web page or an office that can tell you which schools go with a given address.

In Wake, the answer can change after you buy. Boundaries are reviewed every year, and a crowded, or "capped," school can send a new family somewhere else. Look up the address before you buy land, and look it up again before the house is finished.

How do we look up the schools for an address?

Wake. The district's Find Base School Assignment by Address tool shows the assigned elementary, middle and high schools for a home address. It also shows the school calendar and whether bus service is available. WCPSS says every family is assigned one "base school" based on its home address. The tool always has the current year's assignments loaded. Next year's assignments are added after the school board approves the yearly plan, which the tool says usually happens in November. Where they apply, it also shows enrollment caps and split assignments, which are usually for new schools. Its disclaimer says the data are not a legal document.

Johnston. Johnston County Public Schools has an online School Finder. You enter the student's address (part of the street name is enough), choose a grade, and it shows the assigned schools. The page is titled for the 2025/2026 school year and is based on 2025-26 boundaries. It says its information comes from Johnston County GIS (the county's mapping office), may change, and is not guaranteed to be accurate. JCPS also has a School Finder for the 2026/2027 school year, based on 2026-27 boundaries. If you have questions, call JCPS Transportation Services at 919-934-8340.

Durham. The City of Durham and Durham County Durham Public School Locator is a map with a "School Assignment" tab. A Durham Public Schools FAQ says new middle and high school boundaries began in 2025-26. It also explains two terms. A boundary (also called a base or attendance zone) is the area whose students are automatically assigned to a nearby school by home address. A region covers several boundaries and decides which application programs a student can apply to. The FAQ sends questions to the DPS Office of Student Assignment at (919) 560-2059.

Chatham. Chatham County Schools links to a School Assignment Locator from its home page. The district office is at 468 Renaissance Dr., Pittsboro, and the phone number is 919-542-3626.

Franklin. Franklin County Schools has an Enrollment & Reassignment page under its Parents menu. The district office is at 53 West River Road, Louisburg, and the phone number is 919-496-2600.

Could our Wake schools change after we move in?

Yes. WCPSS reviews school boundaries every year. The steps include a student-enrollment forecast, a review of the seven-year school construction plan, public feedback on a draft plan, and a final vote by the Board of Education.

The draft 2027-28 proposal came out Sept. 3, 2026. Its main focus is opening the new Morrisville High School. It also covers crowding, stability for families, and keeping groups of students together from school to school. The draft would change base school assignments, calendar application options, and assignments at overcrowded or underused schools. Some students could apply for a "stability transfer" to stay at their current school, but without district bus service.

To see whether an address might be affected, use the separate Draft Enrollment Proposal lookup. Its map compares the 2026-27 assignment with the proposed 2027-28 one. The page says the results "do not represent the accepted enrollment changes and are subject to change."

The timeline the district gives:

  1. Online feedback on the draft runs through Oct. 4, 2026.
  2. On Oct. 20, the board holds a work session to review the feedback, then a public hearing at its board meeting.
  3. On Nov. 17, the board votes on the final plan. After that, the 2027-28 assignments are added to the address lookup.

What happens if a Wake school is capped?

When a Wake school has too many students, the school board may cap its enrollment. A new family whose base school is capped still applies there. If no seat is open, the paperwork goes to an "overflow" school. The student enrolls there with district bus service and goes on the base school's waitlist. Capped schools offer open seats twice a year, at mid-year and in the summer.

To enroll at a capped school, you must already live in the home and show how long you have lived there, because staff check whether you lived there before the school's cap date. Offers to buy and leases showing you have not moved in yet are not accepted.

The schools WCPSS lists as capped include Abbotts Creek, Apex Friendship, Beaverdam, Cedar Fork, Holly Ridge, Hortons Creek, Northwoods, Oakview, Olive Chapel, River Bend, Rogers Lane, Weatherstone, White Oak and Zebulon elementaries; Apex Friendship Middle and Mills Park Middle; and Apex Friendship High and Panther Creek High. At Mills Park Middle and Apex Friendship High, enrolled students who live in the base area can join the waitlist as early as kindergarten.

Can we enroll in Wake before closing on the house?

It depends on where you live now, according to the Base Schools page:

  • Already in Wake County: you enroll from the address where you live now. A signed Offer to Purchase does not prove where you live. You can file a transfer request with the contract attached, and the district will consider it based on space and transfer policies.
  • Moving from outside the county: an Offer to Purchase can be used only to pre-enroll for the coming school year, only if the school is not capped, you pre-enroll before June 30, and closing is set for June 30 or earlier. Final enrollment requires proof of closing, such as a settlement statement.
  • Capped school: an Offer to Purchase is never accepted.

If you have questions about your situation, the WCPSS Office of Student Assignment is at 919-431-7333 or studentassignment@wcpss.net. Questions about buses go to Transportation at 919-805-3030.
